Tigua Indian Reservation and Pueblo |
Located in the suburb of Ysleta, 14 miles e. via I-10 to exit 32 (Zaragosa Rd.), then 2.5 miles s. to Alamenda, then 1 block east.
The Tiguas (TEE-wahs), a Puelbo tribe, were relocated from New Mexico during the Puelbo revolt in 1680. The tribe completed the Ysleta mission, one of the oldest in North America, under Spanish direction in 1682.
The present structure incorporates original foundations and some of the original adobe walls. Adjacent is the pueblo , with an arts and crafts center, a kiva or council chamber, bread ovens and a dance area. Food is available.
